Academic Quiz Bowl - BCHS Edition

BCHS is planning an Academic Quiz Bowl in the spring of 2018. Teams will be comprised of the top performers from each class on a general knowledge quiz that draws its content from all aspects of the high school curriculum, current events, and pop culture. Teams will compete in a Final Quiz Bowl at the end of March. Cash prizes will be awarded to the members of the winning team.

Animal Rights Club

The Animal Rights Club seeks to dispense information about the fair and humane treatment of animals in the school and larger community. Fund raisers are held to assist local animal shelters and national movements for this cause. Meetings are held every other Thursday at 2:15 in the Library.

Book Club

Book Club is designed for students who have a passion for reading, get excited talking about books, and want to share that excitement with others. The BCHS Book Club meets about every six weeks. The club reads roughly four novels a year. Contemporary and classic novels are read and discussed in a laid back environment. Students have approximately four-six weeks to read half of the novel before the next meeting.

Chess Club

The BCHS Chess Club meets Fridays after school in Room 202. Anyone who is interested in learning the game or playing chess on any level is welcome.

Coffee House

Early evening Coffee Houses to encourage performance writing are planned for the 2017 spring semester. Any established or emerging writer of poetry, fiction, personal memoir, rant, or dialogue is invited to share the writing with a java-infused crowd in the Library. All members of the BCHS community - students, teachers, counselors, administrators, support staff - are welcome. Stay tuned for more information.

Family and Consumer Sciences Club

The Family and Consumer Sciences Club is devoted to providing a fun, creative and collaborative environment for students and staff through crafts and culinary arts. Opportunities for community service are also fostered in the organization. Meetings are held monthly with a special activity planned each meeting.

Central Stage

Central Stage is an after school drama group which showcases the performing (acting, singing, dancing) and production (staging, technical) talents of all students in two annual productions. The fall production is Almost, Maine. In the Heights is the 2020 spring musical.

Membership:All students may audition for plays or sign up for the technical (backstage) crew.Footlights is an award-winning program that competes in the annual Halo Awards program in May.

Future Business Leaders of America

FBLA is a national organization which provides students with opportunities in leadership, service to the school and local community, and more. A business-related field trip is planned each spring. Meetings are held on Tuesdays once per month from 2:10 - 3:00.

Membership:Open to all students interested in business. Annual dues are $15.

Gay Straight Alliance (GSA)

This club focuses on promoting tolerance in the BCHS community.

Meetings are held once or twice a month depending on upcoming events such as World AIDS Day, Day of Silence, No Name Calling Week, and National Coming Out Day.

Membership: ALL are welcome.

GX Station

The name of this group comes from the sixth generation home gaming consoles: the G from GameCube, the X from Xbox, and the Station from PlayStation2.

GX Station encourages students to make new friends and fosters camaraderie among diverse groups of the student community at BCHS. The group meets most Fridays after school in the Library Media Center. Students bring in their own games and compete in Guitar Hero, DDR, Super Smash Bros, Naruto, Halo, singstar, Wii, Xbox 360, GameCube, and PS2.

Membership: All students are welcome.

InterAct Club

The InterAct Club is a junior division of the Rotary International Club. The club exists solely for the purpose of performing volunteer work at the local, national, and international levels. Meetings are held every Monday from 2:10-2:35 in Room 31.

Membership: Open to all students.

Annual events include Mr. BCHS Pageant, Powder Puff Football, Pennies for Patients for the CT Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, holiday food and gift baskets for families in need, Charity Cycle Challenge. Throughout the year, there are volunteer opportunities at the Bristol Boys and Girls Club, Indian Rock Nature Center, Barnes Nature Center, the Bristol Public Library, and the Bristol Senior Center.

Math League

The Math Team competes against 26 nearby high schools in problem solving meets.

Practices are weekly; competitive meets are held once monthly on Wednesdays at other schools in the greater Hartford area. Students who are involved with another club or team are welcome to participate on a part-time basis.

Membership: Students with an interest in math and strong problems solving skills.

Advisor: Mr. Kelly McCabe - Room 116

Multi-Cultural Society (MCS)

The Multi-Cultural Society celebrates the many cultures and diverse ethnicities that make up the BCHS community.MCS coordinates a Multi-Culture Week in April to celebrate diversity with culture-infused daily announcements, music, decorations and special lunch menus.During that week the group hosts a "Tastes of the World" potluck dinner complete with entertainment. Field trips to celebrate cultural traditions are also arranged for MCS members.Meetings are held Thursdays, once a month, in Room 27.

National Honor Society

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier service organization established to recognize outstanding high school students.

Membership: Juniors and seniors who meet the academic criterion (3.7 GPA) are invited to join; all members must demonstrate the four pillars of scholarship, leadership, character and service.

Meetings & Events: There are a few required meetings per year. NHS students organize events such as the Dodge Ball Tournament and Canned Food Drive; and facilitate Freshman Orientation.

Performing Arts

BCHS is home to a number of high caliber co-curricular musical performing groups. These include: Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, and other small instrumental groups (Flute Choir, Brass Ensemble, and Percussion Ensemble); as well as Concert Choir, and other vocal groups (Madrigal Singers, DyRAMics, BC Flats, and Bell City Jazz Choir).

Poetry Contest

A Poetry Contest is held in February to screen and determine the school's best poets-on-the-page as well as a live round in March to determine the best performance poets. Poems must be less than 50 lines, in any format, and school-appropriate. The top performance poets go on to the final round of competition in March. Information and entry forms are available from Mrs. Dickau, Room 127, after February 1. The 2017 registration deadline is Friday, February 24.

Bristol Central's student news magazine covering events and topics that matter to students is a great place to have thoughts, writing, photography, or cartoons published.

Membership:All students interested in writing or reporting are welcome to weekly meetings, usually every Thursday.Submissions are accepted from all BCHS students.

Signatures

Signatures, the creative arts magazine showcasing student writing, artwork, and photography, is published annually and distributed to students. The issue is also available online from the school website.

Submissions & Publication: Creative works are accepted from all BCHS students. Entries are reviewed by an editorial board of veteran writers.

Ski & Snowboard Club

The Ski and Snowboard Club provides the opportunity for students to enjoy the sports of skiing and snowboarding. The club sponsors an overnight weekend trip to a ski resort in northern New England each winter for a discounted price in a school sponsored setting.

Membership: Members must know how to ski or ride and must have their own equipment. Lessons and rentals are not provided.

Student Council

Students are involved in a variety of activities helping the school and the greater Bristol Community.

Membership: Open to all Bristol Central High School students

Meetings: Thursdays, after school, in Room 217

Annual Activities include Red Cross Blood Drives, Button Up Connecticut, the Homecoming Dance, Spirit Week, and the Winter Semi-Formal; several fundraisers are also conducted.

Members also serve on the school Governance Committee which discusses and establishes school policy.

Advisor: Mrs. Sarah Hertzler - Room 228

Torch (Yearbook)

The yearbook staff is responsible for organizing and completing a yearbook full of pictures and great memories for all students of BCHS. Staff members make creative decisions on the layout and design of the book as well as creating actual pages in the yearbook.

Production meetings are held weekly from September to April in Room 8.

Membership: Open to all students.

Advisors: Mrs. Leslie Fernandez (production) - Room 28; Mrs. Kathy Archibald (business) - Room 23

World Language Honor Societies

The French, Spanish, Italian and Latin Honor Societies recognize those students who have excelled in the study of those languages.

Membership: Students must be enrolled in Level 3 or higher in Spanish, French and Latin or Level 2 or higher in Italian and maintain an average of 93 in Academic levels or 90 in Accelerated levels to be eligible. A one-time fee of $10 covers administrative expenses and the cost of graduation tassels.There are no regularly scheduled meetings of these organizations.
