DEPARTMENT PHILOSOPHY
The science curriculum will help students to discover relationships and concepts that will lead to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the "world in which they live". Students examine factual knowledge concerning the laws and conditions of the physical and biological world. All science courses are laboratory-oriented. Every student must earn two (2) credits in science for graduation. In addition, students in the liberal arts and technical academies must earn three (3) credits in science to graduate.

Science Courses
Every student must earn two (2) credits in science for graduation. In addition, students in the liberal arts and technical academies must earn three (3) credits in science to graduate. The science curriculum should help students to discover relationships and concepts that will lead to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the “world they live in”. Students examine factual knowledge concerning the laws and conditions of the physical and biological world. All science courses are laboratory-oriented. The goals of the Science Department are to involve students:
- in collaborative problem solving
- in the use and care of equipment
- in the observation and collection of data
- in the interpretation of data
- in communicating both orally and in writing their results of experiments
- in the use of technology to gather information and apply it to their daily lives
The Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics areas include courses based on the ability and the aptitude of the students. Advanced Placement courses are offered in biology, chemistry and physics. These courses require an in-depth study with either independent reading and research and/or the preparation of papers and reports.
A request for alternate assignments in lieu of dissection may be made in biology.
All biology, chemistry, and physics courses meet the requirement for a laboratory science course, which many colleges require. Departmental recommendation is required for all accelerated courses.
