Robert 'Duke' Snyder was a standout in the McCabe-Waters Little League, Pony League and for the Bristol American Legion baseball team. The 1964 Legion team he played for captured the state championship and finished second in regional play.

In public school sports, he played baseball and basketball at Bingham School before competing in both baseball and cross country at Bristol Central. Later, he led the U.S.M.C. baseball team out San Diego in many offensive categories, a team that traveled the western part of the country and played college and minor league teams as well as the San Diego Padres in an exhibition.

He signed with the California Angels in 1969 and hit .406 in his one month of Rookie League play. He was a member of numerous local championship teams including the Bristol Collegians and the Bristol Twilight League team. He was elected into the Greater Hartford Twilight League Hall of Fame in 1993, his first year of eligibility.
