One of Bristol’s all-time great long distance runners, he was a 1968 graduate of Bristol Central High School where he was a standout in cross country and track and field.  During his high school running career, he won three straight conference track meet titles and two titles in cross country. He set numerous school and Bristol records in the two sports, while also setting course marks in other cities and towns. His mile record at Bristol Central held for 43 years. He was a medalist six times in state cross country championship meets.

He was also a medalist at the New England level, winning medals twice in both cross country and track. He went on to run for UConn, where he competed in cross country, and both indoor and outdoor track. As a Huskie, he competed in the New England Collegiate Cross Country Championships, the NCAA Regional Cross Country Championships, the New England Collegiate Indoor Track Championships and the NCAA Regional Indoor Track Championships.
