A native of Bristol, Matt grew up playing in the McCabe Waters Little League and was a three-year member of both the Bristol Central and Bristol American Legion teams (1987-89). In 1989 he earned All-State honors in baseball while a senior at Bristol Central.

Wilson started his collegiate baseball career at Stetson University and was a member of the 1990 TAAC championship team. He completed his last two years of play at Georgia Southern University where he was a two-time All-Southern Conference team selection, an ABCA Division I All-South Region selection, and the 1994 GSU Male Scholar-Athlete. Matt played one year of independent professional baseball before returning to GSU to complete his graduate degree.

Matt went on to complete his doctoral degree in Sport Studies at the University of Georgia and has spent his career teaching in higher education and working in intercollegiate athletics. His research has been featured in national news outlets such as the USA Today and Time Magazine. In 2017 he was honored by the Bristol Tramps Sports Reunion Committee. Matt is married to his wife Lisa and they have a son Rocco.
