Joe DeFillippi graduated Memorial Boulevard and Bristol Central High schools, where he was a standout athlete. He played football, basketball and baseball and was a captain in the first two, while all-conference in football at Bristol Central. In 1977, he played nine different positions in a baseball game for the Rams.

Following college, he returned to his alma mater to become a physical education teacher and coach. He served as head coach of the varsity girls basketball team for four years and the boys varsity for nine. He has coached other sports at Central, while also coaching at Bristol Eastern, St. Paul and Chippens Hill Middle schools.

Outside of school, he has coached at the Bristol Soccer club, McCabe-Waters Little League, Bristol Travel Basketball, AAU boys basketball and baseball, along with one-year stints in the Jaycee Courant League and with the Bristol Junior American Legion team. He led the McCabe-Waters Little League Tournament teams to the 9-10 and 10-11 State Championships in 2006 and 2007 and the 12-yr old All Star team to the District 5 championship in 2008.
